Concept: video-call and assistance service via TV, joining elders and their families. Our project’s mission is to join generations in an easy, practical and realistic way. We know that frequently the use of technology is not very clear and easy to use for the elders and this is what distances them from what they love the most: their family, which are on the other side of the spectrum, worried for the wellness of their parents and grandparents. Our design makes these problems come to an end in a cheap way, different from other services as tele-assistance. Also, the importance of closeness, as elders will be attended by their relatives, but also simple, erasing the gap between age and technology. This communication takes place using a series of technological components: the elders will have a webcam with an integrated SIM card connected to the TV and a remote controller; the relatives will use an app. Our goal is that elderly people feel connected to never stop smiling. Queremos que las personas mayores nunca dejen de sonreír Introduction Technology is a fundamental pilar of our society. We use it to communicate, work, study and even for entertainment purposes. But there is a sector of the population that has been rejected by it, the elders. Spain, specifically, is a very long-lived country: 9 million people are over 65 years old. We forget that elderly people are not digital natives, these devices are often complex, the screens are not readable and there is a huge range of options. All of this is what makes them feel frustration and not want to use them, as more problems than solutions arise from them. That’s why they end up getting used to living without them. A great part of the elders use their telephones and mobile phones to speak to their beloved ones every week. However, a telephone call cannot be compared to what the experience of seeing each other face to face feels like, we all know that an image is worth a thousand words. This made us think about the devices that can be found nowadays in all elderlies’ households, and how these could be used to join families and generations together. The answer was clear: the television. From this premise, we have developed a service which not only improves life quality for the elders, but it also pushes the rest of the generations to keep in close touch with whom it usually feels like a forgotten generation. Concept The service is composed by a webcam (connected to the already existing TV at the household) and a remote controller, both used by the elder that access our service. It is complemented by an app used by their relatives or beloved ones. Our project wants to unite generation sin an easy, practical and realistic way. Its design makes these problems come to an end in an affordable manner, contrary to other telecare services; on a more intimate level, since elders will be taken care of by their families and through a simple system, making the gap between age and technology disappear. Usability The functions that can be performed by the elderlies from the TV towards their relatives’ app is to make video-calls, voice-calls and to contact with the emergency services. All of these thanks to a remote controller that would be carefully designed for easy use and to avoid any kind of doubt regarding its way of use. The functions for the relatives from the mobile app towards the TV include making video-calls, voice-calls, set alarms or reminders that appear on the TV or to activate the surveillance mode and see in the smartphone what is happening through the webcam. In case of an emergency, they can contact the emergency services directly through the app. Social impact Technology is meant to create bridges between those that use it, and the senior generation cannot be left out. When it becomes a non-intuitive activity, it separates then from those they love the most. On the other side of the specter, their families are worried for the well-being of their parents and grandparents, but do not keep in touch on a daily basis. Integrating technology in a familiar and manageable device, both generations come together, combating solitude and lack of communication and giving way to a new definition of being with those we love. Based on previous work on the redesign of a key holder handle that facilitates the opening of doors, research is being carried out on the technological possibilities for the development of a product that facilitates this action for older people and those with reduced mobility. Conclusiones Introduction The opening experience is different for each door, due to the door characteristics, its lock and the environment where it is. There are various solutions based on adapters to facilitate the action, such as elements that increase the holding surface of the keys, or supports that turn knobs into levers. After searching for references, experimenting and the previous experience in similar projects, we observed that traditional door opening systems do not have a design suitable for everyone. The technology progress has been changing our way of interacting with the environment and this leads us to ask ourselves: is a physical key necessary? Nowadays, either old and young people have a mobile adapted to their needs and accessibility. A multifunctional tool that everyone holds with them. Therefore, the proposed solution makes use of this device as a facilitating element of the door opening process. Methodology The project have being developed by the next stages: choice of the theme by dot voting; share of the background of previous projects developed; individual experimentation of the problem to get to know the user by the role playing with physical self-limitations; exploration and categorization of found solutions; constant discuss for decision making; criteria analysis through selection matrices; and the distribution of roles for the generation of the consensual solutions. Results The door handle has been designed under the accessibility parameters of universal design. Its surface length has been increased, adding an angle that enables it to be manipulated with different parts of the body (forearm, elbow, arm…) and part of the surface have been covered by a polymer that facilitates its grip. The mobile application has a simple interface to store virtual keys. These keys are activated by approximation and biometric finger and / or facial recognition, allowing a personal and security identification. In addition, this system has the installation of a camera on the door for facial recognition, as an alternative to finger opening or in the case the mobile battery runs out.
